BACP speaks for me (occasionally)

I confess I haven't always been able to say that, but BACP's position statement on the Statutory Regulation issue/s is surprisingly good - particularly when viewed from the precarious position of the Person-Centred Approach in all this *stuff*.

Check it out and tell me i'm wrong:

Soteria Network Conference 2009

SOTERIA NETWORK CONFERENCE 2009

A Soteria House – A Real Alternative for Helping People through ‘Psychosis’
Making It Happen in the UK

A one-day conference in Saltaire, Bradford for everyone interested in alternatives to current biomedical approaches to ‘psychosis’ organised by the Soteria Network.

Tuesday 3 November 2009
Victoria Hall, Saltaire, Bradford BD18 3JS

* We know about the problems with current practice
* We understand that people want alternatives to hospitalisation and medication-based services predicated on dignity, respect and choice
* We believe the time is right to create a Soteria House in the UK

Speakers will include:
* John Bola – world authority on minimal medication approaches to ‘psychosis’ and colleague of Loren Mosher (founder of the first Soteria House)
* Fiona Venner – manager of the Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service
* Adam Jhugroo – Evolving Minds, Bradford

The conference will start at 9.45am (registration from 9am) and close at 4.30pm. There will be a bookstall and workshops dedicated to exploring the practical issues surrounding setting up a Soteria House in the UK

Cost: There is no fixed price – the organisers invite attendees to make a contribution based on their ability to pay across a scale from £0 to £100. As a guide, an appropriate contribution from waged professionals could be between £50 and £100, and from the unwaged or service users £0 to £15. Lunch and refreshments are included in the price.

To book a place, please contact Dawn McCarrick on T: 0121 331 7151 E: dawn.mccarrick@bcu.ac.uk
For queries, please contact Paula Quick on 01629 812738

* A Soteria House was originally developed as a residential alternative for people diagnosed with ‘schizophrenia’ or ‘psychosis’, moving away from using such medical language and thinking to explain subjective experience. Common elements of the Soteria approach include finding personal meaning in the experience of ‘psychosis’ by ‘being with’ clients; and no or minimal use of antipsychotic medication (with any medication taken from a position of choice and without coercion). The house is run with primarily non-medical staffing; preserving residents’ personal power, social networks, and communal responsibilities.

La Jolla Program

LA JOLLA PROGRAM UK
A project of the Center for Studies of the Person,
La Jolla, California, USA.
PERSON-CENTRED SELF DISCOVERY AND PERSONAL GROWTH
27th SEPTEMBER – 3rd OCTOBER 2009
NORWICH, NORFOLK.

The Center for Studies of the Person was founded by Carl Rogers and his colleagues in the 1970s. Rogers was personally involved in the development and establishment of the La Jolla Program. The Program provides an opportunity to explore personal and professional relationships in a person-centred community. It is an interactive experience, an opportunity to listen and be listened to and develop new levels of communication. Rogers believed that the intensive group experience was a profoundly significant vehicle, which could lead to deep and significant changes in persons, institutions, racial and international tensions and in the values and philosophies of mankind.

The facilitators will be Will Stillwell and Keddie Burrows. Will, who was a colleague of Carl Rogers, works in organisations as coach to individuals, facilitator to groups and mediator in conflict situations. He has served on the faculty of several American universities. Keddie works as a psychological specialist to developmentally disabled people for whom the regular health system has not worked well. She has a long professional history to back up her unique gift of being herself with others.

The venue will be at the University of East Anglia. Numbers will be limited to a maximum of 24 participants, so early booking is advisable.

Cost: Resident Single £525 Double £630 (with double bed.)
Non-resident £265. All rooms are en-suite with TV, hairdryer, alarm clock and tea/coffee making facilities.

Links to uploaded documents

I'm afraid a number of the documents that were uploaded and linked from this blog are not currently available. It will take some time to reupload these documents and change the links but in the meantime if you're looking for anything in particular just leave a comment or mail us (see CONTACT US at the top of the sidebar).

Over the coming months we hope to thoroughly overhaul the PCAYORKS blog and at least return it to its former 'glory' (debatable, i know...)
